Traditional Gift Giving wisdom & etiquette tells us that food is a universally appreciated gift. But in the last two years almost everyone I know has been diagnosed with something that requires them to change their eating habits. My sister needs to eat low carb/high fiber,  my two best friends are Gluten Free due to Celiac & Autism issues in their families, I’ve got a bum thyroid which means no more soy (and it’s in EVERYTHING) while my parents have gone sugar free…

 The few who haven’t been diagnosed with anything?  They are “diet-tarily” changing things up so that they won’t be forced to later.  Going ‘green’ by eating food that is grown organically, locally, isn’t processed and is in season is the way we were actually MEANT to eat:  it’s the healthiest because it’s the most natural.

But if someone you love has a diet that is restricted even further, it can be hard to find gourmet gifts. You can always go for a non-food oriented gift, that’s true, but – from dealing with it myself – I know that one of the difficult aspects of having special dietary needs is the constant feeling of the world saying  “NO!” to you.  You pick up ANYTHING and EVERYTHING,  ask the salesperson your list of questions,  read each label,  google the place it came from, call companies to just triple check … and usually, somewhere in the course of that process the buzzer will sound and you will be told no, you cannot, this is not for you, you are excluded YET AGAIN, you are different and wrong and cannot enjoy what others can, sorry it’s against the rules, so NO.

Having experienced this, I actually think that the best gifts for people with dietary restrictions – whether they be low sugar, low salt, no gluten, dairy free, vegan, all organic or whatever – is to give them a basket of food that screams, “YES YOU CAN! In fact – PLEASE DO!”
