In the next few GROWING GREEN KIDS blog segments we will continue discussing how to make the first party a child will ever have eco-chic and planet friendly… No, not the Birthday Party, we mean the: Green Baby Shower!
Let’s talk about the basics of throwing a GREEN BABY SHOWER, taking that GREEN as the shower theme and breaking it down into how a hostess can make a low stress, eco-chic fabulous green baby shower day for the mommy to be.
Today we’ll focus on Good Green Baby Shower Invitations:
You have two great choices: green stationary, or e-vites!
E-vites are simpler, obviously.
But you should know that there are many fabulous options of recycled paper, plantable paper made from seeds, and stationery made from more sustainable sources than trees, such as GGN’s handmade (by women in Nepal), elegant lokta-bush paper invitation sets. Good Gifts Naturally’s special eco-chic Nepalese Party Invitation Sets can be made to order for you, and works with ink and laser jet printers.
But with either choice, you just need to include one fabulous sentence in your invitations that will explain the theme choice. For example: “You are invited to a Green Baby Shower for Mary to help preserve the planet for her little angel/seed” or, “Sara has chosen to have a natural pregnancy and birth. Let’s help her celebrate with an All Natural, Green Baby Shower!”
It’s common practice these days to say where the mommy is registered in the invite. Have your registry selections reflect your desire for or recommendation for good green organic baby gifts.
Depending on the scale and formality of the event, you could send eco-friendly gift wrap materials with the invitation. Another option: instead of wasting wrapping paper ask guest in the invite to wrap their gifts in an organic baby blanket or towel with a bow!
The only faux pas you want to avoid is insistence. Whatever you do, do not say anything remotely close to “Organic baby gifts only please. The goal is to politely suggest and invite the guests to help you, the hostess and mom to be, make the day as green as possible- when possible. Green baby showers celebrate a new life, while reminding us in a loving way about our responsibility for all life. But! The last thing you want to do is alienate non-green moms, when they might actually be more motivated to rethink if they see how easy it is to make little changes.
And truthfully, at the end of the day it’s your responsibility to provide your little blessing with what you believe he or she needs. Showers and gifts are just icing on the organic diaper cake.
It is important not to forget the purpose of a shower, which is to show the mom our love, excitement and support, and to welcome a new baby into the world. That doesn’t need to involve showering them or your guests with useless junk that will hurt the environment, even if it is cute.
You want to start the baby off on a green, conscientious, world loving little foot.
After all, it’s their green planet too!
Check back with GGN’s Blog this Thursday for Great Green Baby Shower Decorating Ideas and more!
If this is your first time reading our Growing Green Kids Blogs this is a series we have written to cover what we think is an important topic. In addition to having wondered about and experienced it ourselves, we’ve heard from many parents asking and giving advice about how to instill and explain the idea of going green to a child – especially when it comes to gift-giving. After looking all this great thoughts over we decided on what we considered the best ideas for teaching kids about green, fair trade and eco-friendly gifts. The criteria being that the idea was either incredibly easy to do or was something that a parent & child could have a ton of fun doing. We had so many ideas we decided to make it a blog series, so check back with us each Monday and Thursday for the next week or so for more fabulous ideas for you and your kids!
Hopefully it will inspire you as much as it did us!
